Nicole is a wealthy, popular and beautiful student attending the same high school as Jay; except Jay is poor, friendless and suffers from epilepsy. Then someone throws acid in Nicole’s face and her life is turned upside down. She has always been defined as beautiful and now she’s scarred. The book follows her growing friendship with Jay, his attempts to track down the person who scarred her and the way the two of them cope with their problems.
The story is recounted by Jay and his rather distracted style of writing makes it a little hard to get into the book at first. However, he is a good narrator and the story picks up pace and direction. There is plenty here for the reader: jealousy, bullying, fitting in, broken families, being different, hacking and crime solving.
