Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn

Sixteen year old Lily leads a quiet sheltered life in New York. She has a whacky family but is short on friends and missing out on love. Her older brother comes up with the idea that Lily should leave a dare and a clue in a notebook at a bookstore for someone to find.

Dash is that someone. He is looking for a distraction as he spends the Christmas holidays home alone. Soon both Lily and Dash come to enjoy setting complicated clues and learning more about each other from the notes they leave in their notebook. As their curiosity grows they want to meet up but that is also a scary prospect too.

The biggest dare is to leave the notebook behind and to meet each other in person – will their real selves live up to their expectations?

The book is full of whacky characters and interesting references. It is gentle and amusing and romantic as it explores the discovery of young love and of who you are and what you want in life.
