Blood Family by Anne Fine

Edward is aged seven when he is discovered shut away in a flat with his mother. She has had the life beaten out of her by her abusive partner and Edward has learnt to survive by being as invisible as possible. With the help of social workers, foster parents and a new family he begins to rebuild his life. However he has never fully put his past behind him and one day he finds it destroying him and his future.

Despite all the efforts of Edward and of his family, he remains a bit of an outsider. Edward’s story will make readers think about how much we are influenced by our genes and by our circumstances and by our own decisions. It also highlights how important it is to have support from friends or family when things in our lives go wrong.

A sad and thought provoking story.
