Freaks Like Us by Susan Vaught

Jason is best friends with Sunshine and Derrick. They make school bearable for him because, as a schizophrenic, he finds it hard. Then Sunshine disappears and the voices in Jason’s head make him doubt himself. Did he have something to do with her disappearance? It is Sunshine’s belief in him, and his love for her, that convinces him that he would never hurt her. Eventually it enables him to uncover the mystery about her disappearance.

Jason’s honest and witty description of himself and his life help us to understand what he and his friends go through everyday – but as well as understanding them, we also come to like them. This is a funny, sad and touching book. I think any reader who finishes this book will have appreciated getting to know Jason. If it makes just one of us less judgemental, it will have been a huge success.
