Hannah has committed suicide. No one is quite sure why – except the twelve people who receive a set of tapes she has recorded detailing the thirteen events that made her give up on life.
From beyond the grave, Hannah lays bare how small events can join together and build up to destroy a person’s confidence and their will to live. The book is about bullying but also about how people don’t care enough or put themselves out for others. It is a hard book to read because so many of the events that Hannah describes probably happen in school around you and you can’t help feeling a bit of guilt for hurtful things you might have done yourself or situations you might have ignored. A sad book and a haunting book – however it does not glorify suicide and it makes clear that while people failed to help Hannah, ultimately it was her decision to give up.
