The Week magazine is a long-established weekly current affairs magazine aimed at the adult market. It has announced that it will be publishing a new magazine, The Week Junior, aimed at 8 to 14 year olds. The first magazine will be published in mid-November.
The Week Junior aims to cover topics ranging from current news stories to science and geography and film and coding. The format has small. colourful articles backed up by photos and maps.
As with all magazines covering this age group, the problem lies in the big difference between the interests and reading skills of 8 and fourteen year olds and the key to the magazine’s success will be how they bridge this gap and cater for all needs. However this magazine should be a good introduction to non-fiction reading and can act as a stepping stone – should readers feel they have grown out if it then they can move on to magazines or newspapers aimed at the adult market. Older, reluctant readers should enjoy the short articles and graphics and GCSE students will have access to non-fiction articles, an important element of their GCSE English exam.
